      Abstract:Excellent textbooks are the premise and foundation for high-level teaching. However, no systematic summary or research on the development of textbooks on agricultural microbiology is available in China and abroad. Therefore, we investigated and analyzed the development of textbooks on Microbiology published by Huazhong Agricultural University, and summarized the principles behind the updating of the textbooks, and the experience of the microbiologists in teaching and textbook reform, hoping to provide a reference for the education and research on agricultural microbiology at higher education institutions and the development of textbooks on microbiology in China.

    • Mixed teaching of Principle and Technology of Fermentation Engineering: an example of process and practice of antibiotic production by fermentation

      Abstract:Principle and Technology of Fermentation Engineering is a core course of Biology major in colleges and universities of science and engineering, which has been widely applied. Traditional teaching method mainly based on offline teaching is not conducive to students' mastery of knowledge. Additionally, there are some problems in the experimental teaching of this course, such as delay in updating fermentation equipment, lack of large-scale process equipment and site restrictions, which seriously affect the teaching quality. Hybrid teaching mode incorporating online and offline teaching is an important means to enrich teaching resources and improve teaching quality. Taking process and practice of antibiotic production by fermentation as an example, we constructed a virtual simulation experiment project on the basis of virtual simulation platform. In addition, combining offline teaching methods such as classroom teaching and laboratory teaching, we formed a new hybrid teaching mode highly integrating online and offline teaching. The hybrid teaching strengthened the organic combination of classroom teaching and online teaching, as well as virtual and physical experiment, which facilitated students' mastery of theoretical knowledge and experimental skills, cultivated their innovative spirit and practical ability, and improved their comprehensive quality.

      Abstract:The advent of new technologies in the internet era challenged the traditional teaching model. With the concept that teaching and learning are of equal importance, we explored and practiced the "SPOC+PAD class" blended teaching model in Microbiology courses at Shenzhen University. We reconstructed the teaching content according to pre-class, in-class, and after-class modules, and designed and separated each teaching module into five sections:presentation-assimilation-review-discussion- presentation (P-A-R-D-P). SPOC was used in the first P-A sections, and PAD class was used in the following R-D-P sections. Such teaching reform can neither ignore the importance of systematical teaching in traditional classes nor let the students learn completely by themselves. This blended teaching model creates an interactive classroom atmosphere that is fully designed by teachers and fully participated by students and is conducive to achieving a dynamic balance between "teaching" and "learning" as well as between "power" and "responsibility". The first period of teaching reform practice has been fully affirmed by students and achieved high teaching satisfaction.

      Abstract:Research-oriented teaching is an innovative teaching model focusing on students' development, and the purpose coincides with the goal of "golden course" development that emphasizes the cultivation of students' research skills and inspiration of their creativity. In the process of building leading curricula for Microbiology, we combined research-oriented teaching philosophy and BOPPPS teaching mode, and added the "improvement" module and ideological and political materials to establish a problem-driven modular closed-loop teaching model of introduction-objective-pre-test- participatory learning-post-test-improvement-summary (seven-step method) focusing on scientific frontier. The model can effectively improve the logicality and organization of classroom teaching, teaching efficiency, and the ability of students to analyze and solve problems. It lays a solid foundation for students to conduct scientific research in the future and provides a reference for developing "golden course" courses centering on students.

      Abstract:Construction of first-class course is an inevitable requirement for universities to strengthen education and teaching and improve the quality of talent cultivation in the new era. Blended teaching is an effective way to promote the construction of first-class courses. The teaching team of "General Plant Pathology" has actively advanced the construction of "First-Class Course" by reforming blended teaching and by combining ideological and political education and professional knowledge education, online teaching and offline teaching, theoretical teaching and practice innovation, teaching steps and information technology, and diversified assessment and teaching process. Moreover, we also try to build an excellent teaching team, enrich curriculum resources, compile text books, and establish a scientific assessment system. The above efforts have effectively promoted the construction of first-class courses and allowed the courses to be rated as national first-class online-offline blending course.

      Abstract:Flipped classroom is an important approach to realize student-centered teaching and improve students' autonomous learning ability. With the development of online courses and learning platform technology, students can get enough resources before class. However, the students who are used to cramming method still lack the motivation and method of independent learning. Therefore, our team tried to use the classroom activity design of scenario simulation to address the difficulties in the implementation of flipped classroom. We found that writing scripts according to clinical cases can improve students' interest and ability of self-study, which significantly increased the online preview time, chapter visits, reading rate of reference materials, and group discussion time. In class, the knowledge learned before class was practiced, which promoted the interaction between teachers and students, helped students deepen their understanding, improved the test score and course satisfaction, and cultivated the teamwork spirit, clinical thinking, and professional ability of students. Therefore, the integration of scenario simulation facilitates the realization of the closed loop of pre-class learning and in-class learning in flipped classroom teaching. This teaching attempt will provide reference for further development of flipped classroom.

    • Application of simulated plastic bacterial cultures in the teaching of Medical Microbiology Experiment

      Abstract:Medical Microbiology Experiment is a compulsory course in medical universities and colleges, which concerns laboratory biosafety. In order to eliminate hidden dangers over biosafety and avoid problems such as unstable results caused by experiments and atypical biochemical reactions, we have made simulated plastic molds of the typical bacterial cultures and biochemical reaction outcomes of microbiology and have applied them to the experiment teaching. The experiment examination and questionnaire survey results of students were compared between the experiment group and the control group. The results showed that the plastic teaching aids had high simulation degree and met the requirements of observation points in teaching, and students and teachers had high acceptance of the teaching aids. The assessment score of students in the pilot class with application of the teaching aids was slightly higher than that of students in the control class, which indicated the teaching performance as expected. In a word, the simulated teaching aids can guarantee the teaching quality and has a good prospect in the future.

      Abstract:We put forward the concept of achievement-driven method in Enzyme Engineering teaching, aiming to solve the problems of students' unwillingness to learn and low learning efficiency. Achievement-driven teaching takes advantage of subjective initiative of teenagers to unlock achievements and combines curriculum content with achievements to drive learning. By introducing the achievement system into the Chaoxing learning APP, and considering the content of Enzyme Engineering course, we designed the achievement composition and the corresponding reward mechanism that improved students' self-learning ability.

      Abstract:Microbial Physiology is a core course of microbiology and environmental science and engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology. However, the traditional experiment teaching approach, which is time-consuming, uncertain and irreversible, is difficult to offer fully professional experiments in the classes of Microbial Physiology. Building a virtual simulation experiment system for Microbial Physiology through the combination with advanced virtual simulation technology and internet technology can break the time and space limits in the experiment teaching and promote the reform of postgraduate education in microbiology and environmental science and engineering. We take the mechanism research and application of microbial flocculant synthesis as an example to explore the teaching from micro to macro scales, aiming to cultivate students' ability of studying the underlying mechanism of microbial flocculation with the knowledge they have gained, encourage students to think independently, and stimulate their enthusiasm for scientific research.

      Abstract:Virtual reality experiment is an important approach of modern intelligent teaching, improving the teaching quality in medical colleges and universities. We developed the virtual reality experiment on the detection and control of Vibrio cholerae, which not only made up for the experimental teaching that cannot be carried out due to biosafety issues, but also solved the problem of operation standardization in the teaching of microbiology experiments. The blended three-step teaching model was adopted to realize the student-centered teacher-student interaction. A design-based experiment report combined with education elements was created to cultivate medical students' sense of professional mission. The assessment standards were refined to realize the evaluation of process. We explored the blended experimental teaching model composed of pre-class inspiration, in-class assimilation, and post-class consolidation and extension to improve the experimental skills of students and achieve the goal of co-education of knowledge (literacy) and practice (ability).

      Abstract:Microbiology, as a booming discipline closely related to human beings, is of great importance in the field of life sciences. In view of some common problems in the teaching of microbiology series courses, our university plans to offer a new course named Frontiers in Microbiology to senior undergraduates in three national first-class undergraduate majors (Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Bioengineering). It will be an complement and upgrade of the basic theoretical course Microbiology, which is one of the first batch National First-Class Undergraduate Courses. This new course is designed to address the frontiers and hot topics in microbiology, to expand students' theoretical knowledge and vision of microbiology, and to improve students' scientific spirit, scientific thinking, and ability in solving complex problems. In this way, this course will make an important supporting role for the cultivation of innovative professionals in microbiology.

      Abstract:The course of Modular Microbiology Experiments of our university is among the first batch of national online first-class courses. Outstanding teaching team, excellent offline courses, innovative teaching method, and ideological and political education are the four core elements of first-class curriculum construction. To be specific, firstly, we held teaching seminars, prepared lessons, set up a WeChat group for communication, applied for teaching reform projects, wrote papers on the reform, compiled teaching materials, and participated in teaching competitions. In doing so, we established a teaching team with high teaching level, strong desire for teaching reform, and good division of labor and cooperation. Secondly, the offline curriculum system was built according to the first-class course standard. We tailored the course into a comprehensive and research-based experimental course in modular form. As a result, the curriculum was characterized by modular content, inquiry-based learning, and comprehensive experimental technologies. Thirdly, we strengthened the ideological and political education by integrating patriotism, scientist spirit, sense of adherence to academic norms, and social responsibility consciousness. Fourthly, in classroom teaching, we used case teaching method, inquiry-based teaching method, and competition instead of practice to help students to master experimental technologies, improve analytical ability, and develop scientific literacy.

      Abstract:As an important measure of the Ministry of Education to comprehensively deepen the education and teaching reform, the initiative of building national first-class undergraduate courses plays an essential part in improving undergraduate teaching quality, which has greatly boosted the research and reform in teaching. Environmental Engineering Microbiology (in English) is a core discipline in environmental engineering. Under the guidance of advanced educational thought, methods, and psychology, the teaching team of the discipline has carried out reforms and innovations in teaching philosophy, course content, teaching plan, and teaching practices, by highlighting ideological and political courses, teaching students according to their aptitude, and adding interactions between teachers and students and among students in class. To be specific, we introduced practical cases, supplemented the latest research progress in environmental microbiology engineering and teachers' research achievements in and out of classes, and improved the level, challenges, and innovation of the courses. On this basis, the knowledge, ability, and quality of students were improved and the learning outcome was significantly improved.       Abstract:The basic objectives of specialized courses in higher education are to cultivate application-oriented professionals in line with the needs of social development, and to enhance students' scientific literacy, innovative consciousness, and advanced ability to solve practical problems. Microbial Pharmacology is a major course for undergraduates and postgraduates of Life Sciences, which lays a theoretical foundation for and improves the practical ability of students to engage in scientific exploration, applied research, and industrial production in the future. Based on the concept of application-oriented teaching, this paper discussed the reform of teaching content and system, constructed a diversified practical teaching mode of thematic knowledge-thematic discussion-project-driven teaching-research training-simulation platform-practical learning, and put forward the countermeasures to break the system obstacle and condition restriction. The teaching evaluation results showed that students had positive attitude to the teaching effect and mode of the course, and the teaching objectives of learning for application has been realized. This study provides a reference for strengthening the curriculum construction of applied microbiology.

      Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has played an important role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and formed complementary advantages with western medicine. Integrating with western medicine promotes the innovation and development of TCM and innovates the mode of TCM talent cultivation. We explored the design and performance of integrative teaching (integrating TCM technology in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19) of TCM and western medicine in Medical Immunology. The research subjects included one class of 2019-enrolled students majoring in TCM at Baotou Medical College. We integrated the textbook content of Medical Immunology with the content in the diagnosis and treatment protocol of COVID-19 and related research results to reorganize the teaching content. Various classroom teaching designs were integrated before, during, and after class to reconstruct classroom teaching. The teaching performance was evaluated based on the scores of classroom group report, after-school group task, and Rain Classroom test, and the students were investigated for course satisfaction degree at the end of the course. The students' average score of classroom teaching was 84.507±4.391 and the five indicators of satisfaction degree exceeded 95%, which indicated that the integrative teaching mode of TCM and western medicine in Medical Immunology can enable students to master basic medical knowledge and deeply understand the internal relationship between TCM and western medicine. Moreover, it plays a role of innovating the cultivation mode of TCM talents. Our study provides a reference for the integrative teaching of TCM and western medicine for other medical majors and promotes the development of integrative teaching of TCM and western medicine.

      Abstract:In recent years, a large number of blended courses have emerged under the background of developing "first-class courses" (Ministry of Education). Through the research and analysis of courses for undergraduates in the past decade, and via the advantages of information engineering in the science and engineering universities, we developed a "five-in-one" blended teaching system for the course of Microbiology suited to the "Internet+" era. Based on the reconstruction of the characteristic content of the emerging engineering, it effectively integrated life science into engineering courses. Then, with multi-dimensional information resources, it provided students with hierarchical and diversified choices. The advanced offline teaching activities laid a foundation for the scientific research and innovation ability of students. The systematic ideological and political education in the course helped students develop correct values. Finally, big data was used for formative teaching evaluation, ensuring the personalized learning quality of students in the whole process. Based on the continuous reform and practices, we have made major headway.

      Abstract:In order to improve the teaching quality, we explored the teaching reform of Pathogen Biology based on the concept of outcome-based education (OBE). Before class, teachers uploaded the learning materials to the Superstar Fanya teaching platform, clarified teaching objectives, and designed the preview tasks. In class, teachers tested the preview results and then carried out the teaching purposefully. Meanwhile, curriculum ideological and political elements were integrated in class to stimulate the learning motivation and cultivate the core socialist values. Mind maps were used to integrate the logical thinking of students, and a variety of interactive sections were set to improve students' initiative in class. After class, teachers optimized the assessment system for comprehensive evaluation and feedback to improve the learning performance of students. Finally, the teaching reform achieved the objective of being student-centered and outcome-oriented and cultivated high-quality applied medical talents with outstanding ability.

      Abstract:Infiltrating ideological and political education into professional course teaching is an important way to achieve the goal of whole-process, all-round, and all-staff education in colleges and universities. Ideological and political education with professional knowledge as the carrier is more persuasive and effective than pure political courses. As a basic compulsory course for biology majors, Biochemistry contains rich and diverse political education resources.       Abstract:Specialized curriculum is the basic carrier of curriculum ideological and political education construction, which is the fundamental task of curriculum teaching reform. Medical Microbiology is a basic discipline for medical students, which involves the pathogenic microorganisms closely related to human life and thus is practical. The construction of curriculum ideological and political education system for Medical Microbiology should be carried out in close combination with the content of the discipline and human health needs. That is how we strengthen students' knowledge learning and ideological education and achieve the goal of "fostering virtue through education". This paper introduced the methods for the reform of ideological and political curriculum for Medical Microbiology, the promotion approaches, and the effect of the education, based on the content of the discipline and the principle of safeguarding people's health and striving for the interests of people. The methods for the reform included reconstructing knowledge, shooting teaching videos, and compiling 50 Educational Stories for Medical Students. The promotion approaches were handing out the book for free, improving the education quality based on the network teaching platform, and boosting the education by enhancing the guidance and communication.       Abstract:Using innovated teaching method in classroom teaching facilitates the innovation of the ideological and political education in colleges and universities. We reform the teaching mode of Microbiology by adopting large-class teaching and small-class tutoring, emphasizing process assessment, combining theory imparting with experiment teaching and innovation practice. Through the introduction of typical education cases, representative inspirational stories, and examples of scientific and technological innovation in China, knowledge is combined with ideological and political elements in the teaching of Microbiology. The practice indicates that the reformed course cultivates the autonomous learning ability and consolidates the professional foundation of students, improving the teaching performance. It improves students' scientific literacy, practical ability and comprehensive quality and enhances students' self-confidence, sense of mission and patriotism, thus integrating knowledge imparting, ability training and value guidance.

      Abstract:To promote the well-rounded development of medical students and cultivate more medical talents with both political integrity and ability, our Medical Microbiology course team, on the basis of implementing the fundamental training objectives of "being patriotic and dedicated to work, healing the wounded and rescuing the dying, being ready to make sacrifices, being with both a benevolent mind and heart, and being good at communication", designed the ideological and political course of medical microbiology from the three aspects of "aseptic concept and biosafety responsibility consciousness", "popular science propaganda, social responsibility", and "scientific spirit" according to the discipline characteristics and the requirements of medical scientists. Moreover, taking Zhong Nanshan and Chen Wei as an example, we carried out "three-dimensional" and "multi-dimensional" quality training for medical students. Data, pictures, topic discussion, case analysis, and materials for popular science publicity were employed for the implementation. A questionnaire survey of students suggested that the teaching effect was ideal.

      Abstract:Curriculum ideological and political education plays an important role in the "all-staff whole-process all-round education" system at colleges and universities, which is one of the hot spots in the current research on higher education reform. This article takes the course of Environmental Engineering Microbiology as an example to expound the ideological and political education practice. Firstly, it discussed the specific measures of ideological and political education from four aspects:exploring the ideological and political elements of the curriculum, improving teachers' ideological and political teaching ability, cultivating students' interest in learning, and important guarantees. Secondly, it demonstrated the effectiveness of curriculum ideological and political education practice from the aspects of improving students' ideological and political ideas, increasing students' curriculum scores, and leading the curriculum ideological and political education of the whole university. Finally, we discussed and prospected ideological and political education based on the teaching practice of Environmental Engineering Microbiology. Through the above research, it is expected to pave the way for the ideological and political education reform and provide a reference for giving play to the education mechanism of Environmental Engineering Microbiology.

      Abstract:Rural revitalization is the only way to achieve agricultural and rural modernization. Agricultural universities undertake the mission of cultivating talents to serve the national strategy. Talents in Bioengineering, Biotechnology and Bioscience majors play an important role in rural revitalization. However, problems occurred in the practice of talent cultivation of the three majors at agricultural universities, including students' unconcern for agriculture, insufficient choices of course and poor practical teaching. Taking Huazhong Agricultural University as an example, we proposed measures for constructing Bioengineering, Biotechnology and Bioscience majors in the new era so as to improve the quality of talents serving rural revitalization strategy. The specific measures included fostering students' passion for agriculture, reconstructing the curriculum system, developing collaborative education, building an outstanding faculty team, and establishing a teaching quality-oriented culture.

    • The “online+offline” blended teaching mode under the concept of STEAM education: taking Microbiology Experiment as an example

      Abstract:With the continuous enrichment of information technology, the e-education guided by new education concept and combined with online learning platform has become a novel trend of teaching reform in colleges and universities. We introduced science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (abbreviated to STEAM) education concept to design the overall teaching process and comprehensively optimized the students' learning process by introducing the "online+offline" teaching platform. The original scattered verification and operation experiments were re-integrated into an independent research-based experiment project with multiple tasks as the main line and Blackboard online platform as the auxiliary line. In the novel teaching mode, we taught in a student-centered manner and provided students with more platforms for self-presentation and discussion. Then, we analyzed and evaluated the teaching quality from four aspects:students' performance, knowledge test, after-class feedback, and experimental operation and report. The results indicated that this teaching mode not only improved students' learning quality and subjective initiative in Microbiology Experiments but also cultivated students' ability of problem solving and innovation in practice. This new teaching mode has reference significance for the teaching of experiment courses in other biological disciplines.

      Abstract:In the teaching of Medical Microbiology, students' understanding and assimilation of basic knowledge can be improved through the reasonable selection of textbooks and guidance books and the optimized arrangement of theoretical courses and experimental courses. Through the reform of teaching methods, analogy, induction and summary, and case analysis can be employed to improve students' ability to analyze, think, understand, and apply what they have learned. Further, students' awareness of biosecurity can be gradually cultivated through independent learning. This paper takes the teaching of Clostridium as an example to expound such practice.

      Abstract:We explored the integration of student-oriented teaching, a modern educational idea widely popularized in colleges and universities, into the teaching practice of Enzyme Engineering from the three links of class preparation, class teaching, and class evaluation. We designed the student-oriented teaching scheme of Enzyme Engineering through improving the teaching objectives, optimizing the teaching content, and developing the blended teaching model characterized by "three-link integration & four orientations (interest-, problem-, process-, and result-oriented teaching) & full interaction" as well as the outcomes-based and diversified practical teaching model. Meanwhile, the all-around & all-objective evaluation model was adopted. In particular, we investigated the evaluation of emotional objective for the first time to improve the ideological and political education and better realize the student-oriented comprehensive education. Finally, we evaluated the teaching performance and performed teaching reflection by investigating students' attitude and counting the students participating in competition to further improve the teaching performance. This study provides a reference for Enzyme Engineering related courses to implement people-oriented teaching concept and build student-oriented classroom and practical teaching model.

      Abstract:Introduction is the first lesson of all the courses in universities. A good lesson of Introduction can initiate students' sense of mission, enterprise, and responsibility for science. Through years of teaching research and practice, we believe that the principal purpose of Introduction is to stimulate students' curiosity and thirst for knowledge, ignite their enterprise and sense of urgency, and make them be keen on and know how to learn this course. In order to achieve the above teaching objectives, we constructed a teaching mode for the lesson of Introduction by collaborating teaching contents, methods, and objectives. First, teachers use interesting and flexible means to introduce scenes and objects and then ask questions. After that, teachers, through systematic guidance and inspiration of independent thinking, encourage students to explore the basic attributes, history, current status, and prospects of the subject, as well as the purpose, task, and method of learning, so as to inspire students' ambition and responsibility and enhance their determination and confidence of learning the course well. We takes the Introduction of General Phytopathology as an example to illustrate the teaching process with the above mentioned teaching mode. Years of teaching practice have proved that the above teaching mode can introduce standard, systematic, and comprehensive contents in the first lesson Introduction, which is in line with the teaching objectives. Moreover, this teaching mode is characterized by rich connotation, strong operability, and good teaching quality, which is thus suitable for popularization.

    • Exploration of “early clinical exposure” teaching model in the curriculum reform of Medical Microbiology

      Abstract:Early clinical exposure to enhance the understanding of the role of a doctor is the main direction of higher medical education reform in China in the 21st century. Based on the shortcomings of the current teaching model of Medical Microbiology in the 5-year clinical medicine program, we have reformed both theoretical and practical teaching by adding theoretical classes, discussion classes, and noviciate aligned with the concept of "early clinical exposure". Thereby, we constructed the "early clinical exposure" teaching mode suitable for this discipline. The teaching effectiveness was evaluated by final examination and questionnaire survey. The results showed that "early clinical exposure" teaching mode can effectively integrate basic theories and clinical practices, stimulate the learning motivation of students, and improve their academic performance and comprehensive analytical skills to a certain extent while deepening their understanding of medicine and profession.

      Abstract:Medical Microbiology is the core discipline in clinical medicine, which features sound theoretical basis and feasible applicability. In response to the requirements for medical talents, the reform of Medical Microbiology should highlight the competence and quality training of students based on the learning-centered teaching philosophy. According to the results of learning situation analysis, flipped classroom, integration of ideological and political elements, problem-based learning (PBL), virtual simulation experiment, clinical probation, and open experiment were adopted for the teaching reform. The practice results indicated that the reform system allowed the course to serve medical talent training, mobilize the enthusiasm of students, improved students' innovation ability and service consciousness, and achieved a win-win situation between teachers and students, thereby realizing the teaching goal.
