Abstract:Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have to take online classes this semester. During winter holiday, we tested four kinds of live broadcast tools, such as Teachermate, QQ group sharing screen, QQ group classroom and Tencent Classroom, and analyzed their features. According to the characteristics of the course I teach, The microbial world, which is a core general education course with more than 100 students, I finally select Tencent Classroom as live broadcast tool, combining with Teachermate platform. This attempt had achieved good effect and provide a good glimpse into online course practice.

Abstract:Microbial Engineering Technology and Equipment is a core course in bioengineering majors, which highly emphasizes the development of practical knowledge and applied skills. The theory of outcome-based education (OBE) was adopted necessarily in this college course teaching reform emphasized in three key points: 1) to clarify the ability of the students in the course and then formulate the expected learning outcomes; 2) to optimize the entirely teaching process, including the integration of instructional contents, and finally a multiple complex teaching-learning platforms of “Class theory teaching – Learning in the network – On site teaching – Computer simulation” would be constructed successfully; 3) to diversify student-orientated pragmatic and real-time evaluation methodology to promote continued improvement of instruction and educational alignment. Through these reforming strategies, we could leverage the students self-paced learning skills, and thereby promote a higher level of excellence in college biology curriculums.

Abstract:Based on the current multimedia classroom teaching, the paper introduces the mind map and proposes a new visual thinking strategy for the teaching of Microbiology in local teachers colleges. In this paper, six key teaching links, such as teaching design, introduction of new courses, blackboard design, class notes, review summary, and teaching evaluation, are applied in the teaching process of Microbiology. It is pointed out that mind mapping can not only improve the teaching effect of teachers. It can also improve students’ learning efficiency. At the same time, it is also a teaching method that can promote students’ enthusiasm and initiative, stimulate students’ association and creativity, form students’ systematic learning and thinking habits, and realize “student-centered” teaching methods.

Abstract:Microbiology is an important specialized basic course for biology majors in colleges and universities, and it is also the theoretical basis of modern biotechnology. In order to comply with the international development trend and improve the professional English level of college students, more and more universities are implementing bilingual teaching in Microbiology. Cognitive learning theory considers that learners need to form a certain knowledge structure by organizing various knowledge in the learning process, so as to achieve the purpose of learning. This article combines the cognitive learning theory with bilingual teaching of microbiology, and discusses it from three aspects: discovering learning to promote microbiology teaching, contacting with the life to promote meaningful learning, and further improving bilingual teaching in microbiology through learning evaluation, in order to promote the benign development of bilingual teaching of microbiology.

Abstract:Quality education for college students imposes certain requirements in the 21st century. They should not only have a good command of theoretical knowledge but also with greater attachment on cultivating scientific thinking and inspiring innovation. In order to cultivate their ability on innovation and promote quality education, a teaching mode of “theoretical courses+innovative project design” were explored in microbiology. In the process, some practices, including the course content adjustment, case introduction, and evaluation system were implemented. The results showed that this mode exert significant influence on the knowledge grasping and expanding, scientific thinking cultivation, along with innovation stimulation. This exploration also roles as a strong boost for quality education in colleges and universities.

Abstract:With the increase of social need to the intellectual quality, it has become a basic requirement of school teaching: to explore the new teaching pattern, pay attention to the student ability training, and improve the talent training quality. Scaffolding teaching means that teachers provide a conceptual framework which is based on students’ existing knowledge to help students understanding new knowledge, just like a process of building a ladder, ensuring that students’ existing knowledge becomes the key for them to construct a new knowledge system. Scaffolding teaching emphasizes students’ learning initiative and pays attention to students’ ability cultivation. In the simulated environment created by teachers, students complete knowledge construction by means of active exploration and cooperative learning to improve their comprehensive ability. In this paper, the authors explored the teaching practice of scaffolding in exploratory learning through the process of scaffolding construction, situation creation, independent exploration, cooperative learning and effect evaluation.

Abstract:In view of the current situation and characteristics of the students majoring in biotechnology, case teaching reform is explored in microbiology class. In the Microbiology teaching, students sought for cases after class and shared them in class, teachers introduced some practical cases in the theories teaching, and the classical scientific research cases were deconstructed by teachers and students. The purposes of stimulating students’ learning initiative, promoting knowledge internalization and transformation and cultivating innovative thinking in scientific research, were attained. The practice teaching proves that case teaching can effectively stimulate study enthusiasm and improve comprehensive quality of students.

Abstract:Metabolic Engineering is a core course for undergraduate and graduate students major in Bioengineering. Whether it is “intelligent manufacturing” for emerging industries or the upgrade of traditional fermentation industry, this course can reflect the characteristics of the Emerging Engineering. Metabolic Engineering is more focused on cultivating students’ ability to comprehensively use professional knowledges to solve practical problems, that is, to rationally design metabolic pathways and regulatory networks to achieve the “bio-intelligent manufacturing” of the target products. Based on the comprehensive, time-effective, and applied characteristics of Metabolic Engineering, we have clearly defined the course goals, focused on classic content, followed the discipline development, highlighted practical application, and emphasized teacher-student interaction to continuously optimize the teaching system and teaching content. In this course, we also put forward a variety of teaching ideas such as “laying stress on the succession of teaching contents”, “inspiring students’ thinking through typical cases”, “displaying cutting-edge developments of the discipline”, and “summarizing the important teaching contents”. Abstract:In the first-class undergraduate talent training, the “golden class” are strictly required to be built around the standard, namely high-level, innovative and challenge. On basis of the Microbial Physiology course, the national microbiology teaching team of Nankai University reorganized the teaching content and produced the online course Microbial Physiology. The course team also used online course to carry out a flipped classroom and online- offline teaching. We add difficulty to the course content, and students need more time to study and think after class; the course content also adds frontier and timeliness; the teaching form fully reflects the advanced teaching mode through IT-assisted teaching tools. Teachers strictly control all aspects of classroom teaching, using the new techniques and methods such as Rain classroom, Blue ink, and Wisdom tree to assist teaching, including students’ attendance, class activation, quizzes, effective evaluation, summarize and other teaching activities; through interactive and inquiry-based teaching, we organize students to conduct high-quality discussions in classroom, and cultivate students’ ability to actively learn, think and express; adopt diversified homework design system and course assessment methods to develop students’ ability to think independently and apply what they have learned. Microbial Physiology has been successfully launched on the Chinese University MOOC platform. Through the construction and application of the Microbial Physiology online course, it was successfully transformed from the “knowledge transfer type” course to the “capacity training type” course.

Abstract:An appropriate evaluation mode would be an important guarantee to build what we call “A golden course” and to fully achieve the teaching objectives. We are trying to explore the proper assessment and evaluation criteria for Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Experiment course to make our teaching in a better efficiency. The research subjects included the five-year program undergraduates of medical education in Grade 2015, who were assessed by the summative assessment mode, and the five-year program undergraduates of medical education in Grade 2017, who were assessed by the comprehensive assessment mode, combining formative assessment with summative assessment. Based on the final scores and the questionnaire survey analysis, the average score of final practical exam of Grade 2017 was 87.7±9.35 and that of Grade 2015 was 82.0±9.05. The average score of Grade 2017 was higher than that of Grade 2015 with significant difference (P<0.01). Furthermore, the students’ satisfaction degree increased from 86.9% (summative assessment mode) to 98.0% (comprehensive assessment mode). In conclusion, compare to sole application of summative assessment mode in the students assessment, the invite-in of comprehensive assessment mode in our Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Experiment course has been proved to be able to improve students’ enthusiasm to active learning and to be helpful with elevating the teaching quality.

Abstract:A small private online course (SPOC) is a kind of blended teaching mode that combines the resources of a high-quality massive open online course (MOOC) with face-to-face classroom teaching. It is the reconstruction and innovation of teaching mode. Based on this concept, we have put into practice of the “SPOC-classroom” teaching mode of Microbiology course, starting from the design of teaching plan, the implementation of “SPOC-classroom” teaching, to the multi-dimensional score evaluation ways. Abstract:In the current era of globalization, it is very important to promote English teaching for international cooperation and communication. However, how to avoid the English teaching becoming formalistic is a serious question. It is worth exploring to efficiently integrate English communication with knowledge impartment, so that the English teaching can really achieve the goals of building up a system of microbial knowledge, enhancing students’ interests, inspiring scientific thinking and knowledge application. Over the past few years, we adopted a gradual way to transit from a bilingual teaching of Microbiology to the whole English teaching of Microbiology genetics. The teaching contents are structured in ways that are from superficial to deep, from general to specific. Meanwhile, we devoted the teaching to the combination of basic knowledge and experimental technology. A various forms of teaching such as class test, after-school homework and class analysis and discussion have been involved to improve the teaching quality. After several years of continuous exploration and practice, English teaching has mobilized students’ active participation and learning, enabling students to exercise their ability to learn, explore, solve problems and communicate in English. The stimulation of students’ learning interest and enthusiasm demonstrated the effectiveness of the English teaching.

Abstract:Course construction is the key point to solve the current teaching problems. Moreover, course design is the most important part of course construction, which determines whether a curriculum can achieve the educational goal. This teaching reform was based on the learning-centered teaching philosophy and the principle of “constructive alignment”. We redesigned learning goals, learning activities and learning assessments according to the framework of “Integrated Course Design” named by Dee Fink. Especially, we designed learning goals which not only cover foundational knowledge, application, integration, but also emphasize human dimension, caring and learning how to learn. We organized teaching by “Presentation-Assimilation-Discussion”. One year after the end of the course, the questionnaire survey results showed that students’ recognition of achieving learning goals ranged from 64% to 87%. This shows that the “learning-centered” course design to a certain extent has achieved the desired results, it is worth exploring further.

Abstract:Microorganisms play an increasingly important role in the tea industry, including in the growth and reproduction of tea trees, disease and insect pest control, fertilizer management, tea processing and storage, and the development of health food products. In fact, an entire discipline, tea microbiology, has recently been established. At present, the college microbiology courses available for those majoring in tea-related subjects have several practical problems, such as having content that is too general and of little relevance to the majors. With the Tea major in the Tea College of Guizhou University as an example, this paper explores the reforms to the Tea Microbiology course required to increase its relevance to the tea industry. The proposed course curriculum involves an introduction to basic microbiology and the specific role of microorganisms in tea production, and sets the theme of teaching content. We introduce the project design and highlight the importance of professional teaching practice and content, the use of a flexible learning style, comprehensive teaching ability appraisal to improve the quality of the course, increasing the students’ interest in learning, and strengthening students’ basic theory and professional skills.

Abstract:We established a teaching mode of microbiological theory and experiment courses based on task and goal orientation by building abundant online learning resources on the open network teaching platform. Meanwhile, the formative learning evaluation and assessment mechanism is established. The effective integration of theoretical and experimental teaching contents not only saves the teaching hours, but also cultivates the abilities of thinking, self-learning and scientific research of students. The results of questionnaire survey on “Microbiology” reform show that the students’ satisfactions to the theoretical teaching and experimental teaching are over 90%. All about students’ learning effect, learning interest, the abilities of analyzing and solving problem have been significantly improved.

Abstract:Food Microbiology is a fundamentally important course for students who major in Food Quality and Safety, and is also essential for further learning of the advanced course of Food Microbiology Testing. Previously the two course were treated independently in traditional teaching design. Later we found that there are many repeated and related contents in theory and experimental teaching of the two courses, which results in the ineffective link between the learning and teaching. In this study, theory teaching contents of Food Microbiology and Food Microbiology Testing were effectively docked by breaking the teaching structure of the two courses. Meanwhile, the experimental teaching contents of the two courses were inlayed into a series of combined experiments. After three years’ teaching practice, the cross-course docking and inlaying-model was effectively constructed. The model improves not only the teaching efficiency, the students’ professional capacity and overall qualities, but also provides a good reference sample for course reforming.

Abstract:Microorganism and Life is the optional course of general education elective course in the department of bioengineering of Hubei University of Technology, which has been opened for 5 years. Here we summarized the practice of reformed teaching methods, emotion training strategy and multiple course evaluation system. The modular teaching and integration of classroom teaching and social practice were used to enhance the students’ learning efficiency and facilitate students’ learning ability. The written-course-complete report and oral presentation were adopted to evaluate the study effect instead of the conventional examination mechanism. The students’ learning enthusiasm was greatly improved via improvement of the teaching modes. Five-year’s teaching reforming practice has played an important role in improving the quality of students. Meanwhile, the students were encouraged to be more interested in scientific research. It was proved that the course Microorganism and Life made a great achievement. Abstract:Taking Hunan University of Science and Engineering as an example, this paper studies and analyses the problems existing in the teaching of Microbial Metabolism Regulation in local colleges and universities. According to the characteristics of bioengineering specialty, the following improvements are made: optimizing the knowledge structure to highlight the ability cultivation, attaching importance to the role of introduction to stimulate students' interest in learning, renewing the teaching methods to practice the conception of “taking students as the main body”; Reforming the assessment system to exercise the ability of comprehensive knowledge application. Abstract:Bioinformatics courses aim to introduce computational technology to the scientific community focusing on animal, plant and microbiology, involving analytic program development and its application. With the rapid expansion of life science, the scope of bioinformatics teaching is continuously suffering a variety of improvements. The teaching mode and development facilitated by customized microbial informatics programs were presented in this report. Graduate students’ innovation and abilities were promoted by interactive platform-driven strategy. The content arrangement, teaching style, presentation methods and scoring criterion have been optimized to satisfy graduate academic prerequisites. Abstract:Curriculum ideological and political education is a new teaching concept popularized widely in colleges and universities in China in recent years. Its core idea is to integrate ideological and political education into the teaching of various courses. University courses can be divided into ideological and political courses, general education courses, philosophy and social science courses, and natural science courses. Among them, natural science courses have the loosest relationship with ideological and political education, and thus the integration of ideological and political elements is the most difficult. In this study, based on the practice of integrating ideological and political education into the teaching of Microbiology courses, we analyzed the necessity and difficulties of implementing curriculum ideological and political education in natural science curriculum, explore the path of mining ideological and political resources, evaluated the teaching effectiveness through the investigation and research, and performed teaching reflection on the practice of curriculum education. In addition, we also discussed the differences of views on curriculum ideological and political education among teachers of specialized courses. This study aims to provide theoretical support, empirical data and teaching experience for Microbiology related courses to implement curriculum ideological and political education, and also serve as a reference for other natural science courses.

By integrating the theoretical knowledge with representative examples and achievements of relative scientists in our country, both professional knowledge education and ideological education could be consolidated. Here we report a preliminary exploration and practice of ideological education in the Microbiology and Immunology course with the introduction of representative examples and achievements of Chinese scientists in this field. The integration of representative cases and achievements of Chinese scientists into theoretical knowledge could strengthen the ideological education in the Microbiology and Immunology course.

Abstract:Starting from the practical significance of the practice teaching reform of environmental microbiology under the background of New Engineering, this paper expounds the construction of the practice teaching mode of Environmental Microbiology course based on the requirements of New Engineering. The practical teaching mode is designed from four aspects: basic experiment of subject, cooperative training between school and enterprise, practice of curriculum design and moral education of teaching practice. The aim of the practical teaching mode is to improve students’ ideological and moral quality and practical ability so as to meet the needs of the development of environmental microbiology industry. Practice teaching effectively strengthens the interaction between teachers and students, stimulates students’ enthusiasm for practice and innovation, and provides a good practice platform for training compound and practical engineers who meet the requirements of New Engineering.

Abstract:Mycological science and engineering major will be set up under the background of the “New agricultural science”, which would accelerate the process of agricultural structural reform and provide the guarantee for training more talents in mycology. Relying on subjects (Mycology and Mushroom crops) and scientific research platform (Engineering research center of edible and medicinal fungi of ministry of education), Mycological science and engineering takes fungi as the features, which aims to train the compound talents who could master the basic theories of biology and mycology, and possess the theoretical and practical knowledge of germplasm resources of fungi, cultivation and breeding of mushroom crop, and fungal food and medicine processing. The establishment of mycological science and engineering major is not only the need of industry development and scientific research, it is also the key measure to solve the main problems in training talents. Based on the concepts of “based on Undergraduate Education”, boost the four regressions, the ideal of morel education and “student-centered”, the major will be constructed around the teaching staff, teaching system, practical teaching platform and teaching guarantee system for training more talents for local and national service. In the next 3 to 5 years, mycological science and engineering will continue to promote the reform in gold class construction and other aspects, strive to for first-class major construction of Jilin province, and step to the national first class major. The establishing and development of the mycological science and engineering major would be both an opportunity and a challenge. we call on more mycologists and talents to join us and contribute to the construction the major and subject.

Abstract:A procedural assessment method suitable for comprehensive and research-oriented Microbiology Experiment course and mixed teaching method has been established. The system involved: (1) online course assessment, including 10 experiment unit tests and the experimental theory test at the end of term. The test score of online course assessment accounts for 20% of the total assessment results. (2) Implement the high-level assessment to cultivate the student’s comprehensive ability and thinking. The first assessment is to make the four experimental reports of module I into the scientific research posters; the second assessment is to write the five experimental reports of module II into scientific research paper; The third assessment is to integrate the three experimental reports of module III into a water quality inspection report; and the fourth is to carry out artistic creation of microbial petri dishes competition. Higher-ranking performance accounted for 30% of the total score. (3) In the final experimental operation test, students randomly selected two exam topics and operated on-site, and all teachers scored simultaneously. The average score of the operational test was accounted for 50% of the total score. The practical operation examination can promote the undergraduate students to master the basic experimental skills of Microbiology. The process assessment of Microbiology Experiment course attaches great importance to the mastery of students’ basic experimental skills and the training of students’ comprehensive ability and thinking mode, which helps to improve the training quality of undergraduate talents in biology science.

Abstract:The cultivation of undergraduate innovation ability is an important content of the cultivation of undergraduate talents in the “double first-class” construction. Synthetic biology is a new field of cross-disciplinary biology, which is praised as one of the ten new technology fields that can change the world. It is an important content of synthetic biology to construct high version classis microbial cells and to use chassis cells to synthesize cell factories. With the goal of cultivating innovative undergraduates, we integrate synthetic biology chassis microbial cell technology into the talent cultivation process. By organizing students to participate in International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition, to preside over Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship projects and to complete undergraduate graduation design projects, the students’ ability of linking theory with practice and innovation ability is improved. Moreover, as chassis microbial cell is a kind of cell whose genome has been simplified or optimized or its gene pathway has been changed, its application also brings certain biosafety risks. We standardize biosafety of chassis microbial cells by a serial of measures including bringing safety education into the training syllabus and teaching plan, publishing professional textbooks related with laboratory safety and operation procedures, developing virtual simulation experiment projects, setting up the lab access system and the information management system, and carrying out biosafety education on chassis microbial cells from purchase, management, standardized use and waste disposal. These practices provide a powerful way and effective guarantee for cultivating innovative undergraduates, and also provide support for the development of synthetic biology and cultivate new forces.

Abstract:The main target of Microbiological Experiment is not only to improve the students’ experimental skills, but also cultivate students’ ability to analyze and solve problems. Although traditional teaching model is helpful for students to grasp the experimental skills in a short period of time, it also restricts their subjective initiative. Combined the traditional teaching model with personalized teaching method, students are totally involved in the experiments. They began to know how to find a reference, design an experiment, analyze the data and write a scientific paper. This manuscript introduced how to apply personalized teaching model in Microbiological Experiments.

Abstract:Fermentation Engineering Experiment is one of the important engineering courses for bioengineering majors. It is also an important course to train students’ engineering design, engineering practice and innovative thinking. Based on conceive-design-implement-operate (CDIO) engineering education model, Fermentation Engineering Experiment carries out curriculum design and goal-oriented teaching mode reform by constructing modular curriculum content and project-oriented system of conception, design, realization and operation. The fermentation engineering experiment course as a carrier, it integrates engineering basic knowledge, fermentation engineering system practical ability, team cooperation ability and innovation ability training. The evaluation system of students’ learning effect based on outcome-based education (OBE) concept was established, and the teaching task of Fermentation Engineering Experiment course was finished. The students’ satisfactions for the reforming course of Fermentation Engineering Experiment have improved, and the teaching effect is remarkable.

Abstract:The symbiotic relationship between rumen microbes and ruminants is an important knowledge that must be mastered by undergraduate students in animal sciences. The authors employ a problem-oriented teaching method to enable students to better grasp the role of rumen microorganisms in the growth and development of ruminants, and to achieve active cultivation in the quality and ability of the students to rationally feed ruminants, correctly prevent ruminal diseases, and carry out research related to ruminants in the future.

Abstract:College students are a major force to promote the construction of ecological civilization. Abstract:As the fundamental courses of environmental, biological, food and medical majors and so on, microbiological courses are extremely important. Within the “Internet +” era, modern educational technology accelerates the development of new form teaching remarkably. While bringing vitality into teaching activities, it effectively promotes educational equity, reduces teaching costs, and provides a realistic basis and reliable guarantee for the practice of lifelong learning. Connotative development puts forward new requirements to the construction of curriculum resource. In this paper, current situation and existing problems around construction of microbiological courses in colleges and universities were analyzed. Combining our practical experience on the construction and application of auxiliary book-network-mobile terminal integrated expansion resource, how high-quality teaching resource, especially expansion resource match well with high-quality course, could be built up was preliminary explored. Abstract:To improve the teaching efficacy of plant pathogenic fungi unit in course of Plant Pathology, the connotation, evolutionary history of Fungi and True fungi, and the content arrangement in different textbooks compiled by different authors were systemically and logically reorganized in this paper. Our opinion from the analysis is proposed that suitable textbook and in-class teaching methods should be selected and organized specifically according to the different audients, teaching plan and teaching objectives. In other words, the lectures for the major of plant protection in an agricultural university should be systemically designed upon pre-requested course of Biological Taxonomy for a clear awareness to the concepts of Fungi and True fungi. For the other majors such as the major of plant production, better explanation of the concepts in class should be better and enough. Specific teaching design and strategy will improve the teaching effect greatly and meet the requirements from different majors.

Abstract:Numerous natural science courses contain a wealth of aesthetic education resources. In recent years, the teaching team of course Microbiology from Huazhong Agricultural University has incorporated aesthetic education into educational goals, enriched the aesthetic education practice in curriculum teaching, and integrated the appreciation, presentation and creation of beauty into teaching process through visual teaching, practical teaching and heuristic teaching. Practice has shown that the integration of aesthetic education in microbiology teaching not only helps to develop and enhance students’ aesthetic needs, ability and consciousness, but also helps to stimulate students’ interest in learning, enhance professional self-confidence, and cultivate a sound personality.

Abstract:In teaching of Microbiology course, it is an important way to cultivate students’ abilities for independent thinking and systematic learning. As the first part of Microbiology course, “introduction” should help students to cultivate the ability of independent thinking and establish the overall framework. The “introduction” focuses on the development history of microbiology and the five commonalities of microorganisms. In the process of teaching the development history of microbiology, we will take Pasteur’s flask experiment as the starting point, let students learn to think same question from different levels. By students’ group discussion after the teaching of the development history of microbiology, let the students realize the importance of scientific development law and independent thinking. The five commonalities of microorganisms are determined by the “micro”, the characteristics of microorganisms, and there is a rigorous logical relationship between the five commonalities. The five commonalities of microorganisms are the core of the characteristics of all aspects of microorganisms, and are consistent with the order and contents of each chapter in the “Essential microbiology” compiled by Deqing Zhou, and that will help students to establish an overall framework, and easy to put the knowledge points of subsequent learning into the framework and learn microbiology more systematically.

Abstract:Microbiology is an important basic course of life sciences, which is closely connected with everyday life. In view of the complexity, abstraction and dryness of this course, how to guide students to study independently and cultivate their thinking and innovation ability is a problem that every teacher should think about and solve. Based on the above problems, this study puts forward project-based teaching mode of Microbiology and analyzes its importance. Compared with the traditional teaching mode, project-based teaching mode can better improve the attendance rate and students’ academic performance and most students are satisfied with this teaching mode. Abstract:Microbial application technology is a professional foundation course with its typical feature of combining theory, practice, and application in aquaculture technology. Because of the existed problems in the course content, teaching mode, and evaluation method of the current teaching, this paper firstly selects the course content based on the professional positions requirements and vocational standards and reconstructs the teaching content based on the systematization of the work process, then adopts the online and offline mixed teaching mode with the digital resources jointly built by school, enterprise, profession, and industry, finally applies the four-dimensional binary evaluation method to evaluate the learning effect. Practice teaching shows the course developed in this paper can effectively stimulate students’ learning enthusiasm and significantly improve teaching quality and teaching effect.
