Abstract:This paper introduces the reform practice of the assignment design and evaluation system in the teaching process of the national excellent resource sharing course Microbiology in Huazhong Agricultural University for 2015–2017. The project is composed of three parts, including the “3211” tower design, binary evaluation system, the file record and the evaluation feedback mechanism. In each section, problems are designed according to the tower design: 3 basic questions + 2 divergent problems + 1 fixed question + 1 knowledge expansion problem. Two sets of system are adopted for correcting and evaluating homework. One is ABCD system which emphasizes knowledge and application and the assignment is graded by answering questions correctly. The other is M (model) system designed to encourage thinking and innovation, students are scored by their independent thinking spirit and scientific thinking ability. The corrected homework is sent back to the students in time. In the implementation of the project, we established files and recorded in detail each student’s job completion and gave them timely feedback. The information feedback includes the whole job briefing, homework questions review and model homework recommendation. We praise the exemplary students by scanning and uploading their model homework in the QQ group and encourage every student to make progress. After three years of teaching reform practice, it is proved that these measures can facilitate teaching and help teachers to clearly know how the students learn about the course, cultivate their independent thinking ability and scientific spirit of innovation, encourage their personal development and team collaboration, and achieved good results in practice.

Abstract:Pathogenic microorganisms are the main material of laboratory exercises in Medical Microbiology, which means that the biological safety in the laboratory is the key character differing from that in other laboratory. Since the laboratory condition limited, previous laboratory exercises of Medical Microbiology used to be conducted in the ordinary laboratories which were not fully consistent with the Biological Safety Regulations, indicating in potential biosafety hazard for partial contents of laboratory exercises in Medical Microbiology, as well as being a bottleneck for development of medical microbiology experiment curriculum. In order to solve this problem, we have established the new experimental curriculum system of Medical Microbiology in Peking University through the training staffs, upgrading laboratory hardwares, evaluating the application of bacterial (viral) strains and constructing the software related to the content of the experiment, guaranteeing the regulations related to biological safety for experimental practices in microbiology laboratory.

Abstract:Cloning strategies is the most essential tools for molecular biological studies and bio-product development and thus students in biological techniques and related majors should have a solid theoretical foundation and enough practical experience with this technique. As a fact, due to having less training and practice opportunity during their studies, it is difficult for students to apply what they have learned. Aiming to make the undergraduates better master the gene cloning strategies, we have adopted a model that combines theory with application case for the teaching-learning of cloning strategies in Genetic Engineering course. The cloning strategies were presented section by section with traditional classroom teaching and the undergraduates were made to fully grasp the process of gene cloning and available methods via designing questions and tasks and enlarging basic knowledge points. Additionally, research papers were introduced into classroom teaching-learning and the students got to know how to use cloning strategies to make an experimental design and select the methods that can be used via self-learning, discussion and self-presentation under instructor’s guidance. Our practices show that the model combining cloning theory and research paper can bridge the gap between classroom learning and application, raise the students’ experimental design and problem solving skills, and cultivate their logical thinking.

Abstract:Flipped classroom, one of the most popular teaching modes in recent years, takes the students as the main body. QQ platform was used for Immunology flipped classroom and achieved a good effect. However, due to the QQ platform technical constraints, it is difficult for teachers to supervise and examine students’ self-study. Therefore, on the basis of our recent practice, “Wanke001.com” was used as a platform designed to complete the pre-class self-study tasks to get points as a pre-class teaching evaluation. Using “Wanke001.com” as a platform has proved that it not only promoted the students to complete pre-class self-study tasks in high quality, but also enable teachers to know how students understand the pre-class content timely, so that in-class teaching would be more targeted to improve the teaching effect of the immunology flipped classroom.

Abstract:Environmental Engineering Microbiology is a core course for environmental majors, which plays an important role in the forming of students’ knowledge structure and in the development of students’ application skills. In order to realize the target of the course and achieve the learning expectation of it, the concept of Outcomes-based education (OBE) is employed in the teaching reform, and the reverse-design and positive-implementation principle is also put forward in the teaching of Environmental Engineering Microbiology. The reverse-design and positive-implementation principle is to optimize the teaching process according to the expected course target, which includes the choice of teaching content, the enhancement of the coordination of Environmental Engineering Microbiology and other courses, and the strengthening of students’ dominant role in the teaching implementation. Through the reform of teaching methods, we can promote the expected learning output and construct a reasonable learning output evaluation system. Although the OBE concept has been introduced into the teaching implementation, and some achievements have been made, the construction of the system has yet to be perfected.

Abstract:Microbiology is an important part of life sciences. With the rapid development of science and technology, the teaching content and teaching methods of microbiology need to be constantly updated to meet the requirement of high-quality personnel training. In the teaching of microbiology, Huazhong Agricultural University has been actively carrying out the teaching reform practice based on the cultivation of innovative ability. We have tried to promote students’ scientific spirit in the classroom through the respect of academic celebrities, through paying more attention to the social focus to stimulate learning interest, through introducing cutting-edge disciplines, training and innovation awareness to actively guide students to learn the relevant knowledge of microbiology. By flipping the classroom and divided class, with the help of “micro-teaching aids” WeChat public platform, we have challenged the traditional teaching model to enhance the interaction between teachers and students and to break the limitations of time and space of student learning to strengthen exchanges between teachers and students. Depending on the State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology and other high-level research platform, we have further encouraged students to enter the laboratory with microbiological knowledge to carry out scientific research practice, guide students to participate in various competitions, in order to transform the theoretical knowledge into practical innovation ability. In short, students can not only firmly grasp the knowledge of microbiology in the classroom, but also get trained in their innovative thinking to significantly enhance their creativity.

Abstract:Fermentation Engineering is one of the core course of Biotechnology and Bioengineering major, being characteristics of practice. The process of fermentation involves in the strain and culture medium, the bacterial seed preparation, fermentation kinetics, process control, production, separation and refining of fermentation products. During the actual production process, each step depends on the specific fermentation theory. If only the basic theory of textbooks is presented, without combining with production practice in the course, the students not only have difficulty in study, but also have no deep understanding of the fermentation process of products. Moreover, they do not know how to combine the theoretical knowledge with the actual production. Thus, the teaching method of Fermentation Engineering course based on the guidance of practice can stimulate the learning interest of the students. Meantime, it can strengthen their understanding of theoretical knowledge. More importantly, the methods used to solve the problems in the actual production process, have important application value to the students in their scientific researches.

Abstract:Environmental Engineering Microbiology is a professional basic course of Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science Specialty in university. However, there are some problems in the experimental teaching of Environmental Engineering Microbiology. For example, the contents are backward, the preparing before experiments and even the experiment often goes through the motions, and the effective assessment methods were lack. Therefore, the author reformed the traditional teaching model by introducing the mobile internet into the experimental teaching, encouraging students to participate in the preparation of the experiment. We optimized the teaching content by reworking curriculum, introducing the researchers into the experimental teaching. And we also optimized the assessment methods by calculating the final scores from the performance and lab reports. Those teaching reforms obtain a favourable effect, and this paper described those teaching reforms in detail.

Abstract:Due to the diversities of matriculate qualities and learning objectives, the verification experiment method of the microbiological experiment teaching, dominated by the teacher, has been unable to meet the current demand of students’ learning. The training model of experiment skills and scientific research diathesis were carried out through the combination of in-class and extracurricular experiments based on rich digital resources and the micro-research projects. As a result, it showed that this model can significantly improve not only the microbiological experimental teaching effectiveness, but also the students’ capabilities of autonomous learning and identifying-solving problems.

Abstract:The experiment of Medical Microbiology is an important bridge for the theoretical knowledge of Microbiology and clinical practice, and occupies an important position in the teaching of Medical Microbiology. However, in the traditional experimental courses confirmatory experiments are mostly presented, and neither the learning effect nor teaching effect is satisfactory. In this paper, the interdisciplinary comprehensive experimental teaching model is discussed, which is based on the relevant knowledge in related disciplines. Related theoretical knowledge is integrated efficiently in this new teaching model, and could also be closely linked to clinical practice in future. This new teaching model could overcome the disadvantages in traditional teaching, greatly inspire the enthusiasm and initiative of students, and effectively improve the ability of independent thinking and comprehensive analysis abilities of students.
