Abstract:Prescott's Microbiology, published by McGraw-Hill Education, have a history of 26 years since the 1st edition. The book now is the 10th edition, contributed by a new author team since 2008. It has been extensively used as textbook in microbiology course in a lot of country. Its version updated once every 3 years, striving to reflect the new knowledge and technology at the frontier of microbiology. The book provides a balanced, comprehensive introduction to all major areas of microbiology. The presenting of the book was based on the need of readers (students) with readability, reasonable arrangement, flexible structure, exquisite artwork and powerful supporting resources. Analysis of the different versions of the book to understand their knowledge system, structure and content, will be helpful in improving the quality of Chinese textbook for undergraduate students.

Abstract:PAD (presentation-Assimilation-Discussion) class is a new teaching model which combines the advantages of lecture and discussion. In this paper, we explored the application of PAD class in Microbiology teaching. This new method encouraged students' active learning and produced good learning effects. Moreover, it increased both student-student interaction and teacher-student interaction in and out of classroom, promoted critical thinking, expanded teaching time and space. All these made our teaching being more attractive to students. PAD class is good for strengthening the connotation-oriented development of higher education which focus on the improvement of teaching and leaning quality.

Abstract:This article introduces the teaching reform practices of Microbiology by flipped classroom in Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China. By means of classroom teaching, homework, course thesis, topic discussion, online FAQ etc, students are actively guided to self-directed learning microbiology related knowledge. The flipped classroom has been in combination with the traditional classroom. And the “course teaching” has been shifted to “knowledge internalization”. Students not only master the microbiology related knowledge, but also can independently and actively study by the way of flipped classroom.

Abstract:For the purpose to enhance comprehensive quality of graduates, a model on teaching assistant was developed based on innovation practice of the college students. Among this, a three-way interaction training, that is, teachers, graduates, and undergraduates, was the key step of the program. During the implementation of the innovation practice, graduate student plays as a link between teachers and undergraduates. Based on their accumulation on knowledge, skills and research subject of microbiology that they doing, graduates plays a real role as subject-directors for undergraduates. The results indicated that this is helpful for thinking-way formation, skills improvement, and the innovatory consciousness development of the undergraduates. And this is a useful way for quality education for the graduate and undergraduates.

Abstract:Traditional classroom teaching focuses on the teacher imparting knowledge and skills to the students, but this model no longer meets the needs of talent cultivation for this new age. Teachers need to seek and devise effective classroom teaching methods, to fully motivate students' enthusiasm for learning, to improve learning efficiency and student satisfaction. In this paper, we adopt the new teaching method of “Classroom teaching combined with small group discussion”, classifying different discussion groups based on students' career plans, setting discussion topics and procedures according to lesson contents and feasibility reports. Implementing to this method, students' grasp of Microbiology knowledge is comprehensively improved, students learn more actively, their capacity for independent thinking and innovation are nurtured, and their career plans become clearer.

Abstract:Microbial Physiology is a major elective course opening to students in grade three. Some teaching methods were explored and attempted in teaching of the structure and function of bacterial flagella, such as optimization of teaching content, reasonable arrangement of teaching order, integration with internet, appropriate use of vivid language, quiz teaching, discussion teaching, and inductive teaching. The students' interest of learning Microbial Physiology has been inspired and better teaching results have been achieved through this lecture.

Abstract:This research intends to integrate QQ platform with project-based learning and introduce it into microbiology teaching to explore how teaching going on via QQ platform. Firstly, the teacher released the topic through QQ folder tools in the group. Then the teacher transferred some documents or released some learning materials related with the project via QQ folder tools in group or one by one, according to the development of the project. Meanwhile, the teacher answered the students' questions and supervised the students to go on with their project. The questionnaire results show that microbiology project-based learning via QQ is helpful to develop students' subjectivity, to enhance the communication between students and teachers and to improve students' learning interest, information literacy and cooperative learning ability.

Abstract:With the development of mobile technology and the popularization of the network, the use of mobile terminal for the study of micro course will become a new way of learning. This paper attempts to utilize WeChat public platform for micro mobile course of Medical Microbiology, and takes advantage of dispersive time to conduct mobile teaching,in order to compensate the inadequacy of traditional classroom teaching. It evaluates the teaching effect, advantages and existing problems of the WeChat public platform in micro medical microbiology course. It further illuminates the broad prospects of micro mobile course of medical microbiology based on WeChat public platform.

Abstract:Micro-lecture is a kind of visible learning resource which is designed primarily for the learner. Due to the characteristics of short and pithy, micro-lecture has becoming more and more popular to the learners using mobile instrument. The experience in the design, development and preparation of micro-lecture for food microbiology were introduced in this paper. First of all, the originality should be highlighted in teaching design. Based on this principle, the effective mode of micro-lecture preparation can be employed. During teaching design, the topic should be carefully selected, the point should be quickly started, the clues should be made clear, and the final part should be organized neat and tidy. Besides, the key point should be highlighted, and a sense of crisis should also be established. When preparing the micro-lecture, the appropriate form should be selected according to the theme, and the PPT of visual sense of beauty is also necessary. The video of micro-lecture is prepared by recording the clear and stable image, followed by editing the film, beautification and composite.

Abstract:Suggestions on the improvement of teaching contents, teaching mode and teaching methods of the course of fermentation engineering were proposed based on the employment positions. Several examples were presented to elaborate the practices of educational ideas such as learning scenario construction, task-driven learning, productive practical training, etc. Several successful informationized teaching methods, including micro-lectures and simulation software were also introduced.

Abstract:Based on the training plan and employment direction of bioengineering specialty, course group has become an important approach to improve the specialty development. The fermentation course group contained two main courses, which were “Biotechnology” and “Bioreaction Engineering”, and three optional courses which were “Bioengineering Equipment”, “Bioprocess Monitoring and Control” and “Metabolic Control and Fermentation”. In addition, other practice teachings, such as “Fermentation Experiment”, “Production Practice” and “Graduation Design”, were also employed to constitute the course group. In this paper, the integration of teaching content in the group was introduced, and the teaching mode of combining classroom teaching with practice teaching was analyzed. The results indicated that the teaching reform of fermentation course group is helpful for students' employment and ability promotion of social practice and innovative competence.

Abstract:The education and teaching theories are the results of education researches. They can be applied to support and guide the designing and reforming of teaching scientifically in order to strengthen the education function of teaching. We used the Learning Partnerships Model which is from the Student Development Theory to reform the Fermentation Engineering Experiment teaching and students' ability was developed in this lab teaching. Here we provided a case for the application of the Student Development Theory in lab teaching and proposed some suggestions.

Abstract:At the beginning of the founding of college of environment and ecology, Xiamen University, we made great efforts on the establishment of biological and experimental courses for undergraduate of environmental science and ecology major. This article discusses the exploration and practice on developing “Environmental Microbiology Experiment” course for undergraduate of environmental science and ecology major. The discussion content in this paper includes the following aspects: curriculum setting, training of basic experimental skills and cultivation of scientific literacy, experimental curriculum assessment methods, teaching effect and evaluation. Students of environmental science and ecology major master the basic skills and comprehensive ability from basic experiments and inde-pendent design experiments.

Abstract:Medical Microbiology is an important basic course for undergraduate students in medical colleges and universities. The Medical Microbiology course, launched by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, has been awarded the National Superfine Course in 2005. Since then, we have continued to push forward the teaching reform, through strengthening the construction of faculty team, exploration of new teaching methods, close combination with clinical resources and the introduction of diversified assessment criteria. These attempts may have significance to realize the training goal of talents with both knowledge and ability.

Abstract:Quality-oriented education of new era college students needs not only have enough theory knowledge, but also has cultivates on scientific thinking and training on application skills. For the purpose to enhance the quality-oriented education, a teaching mode system was developed based on innovation practice on the microbiology course. Among this, an innovation mode with synchronous training, that is, theoretical instruction, skills training, and subject practice was the key step of the system. During the implementation of the program, the results of the innovation practice were included in final grades to force the undergraduates to take part in. A three-way interaction training, that is, teachers, graduate students, and undergraduates, was developed. The target and the technical route of the practice were made by our teacher. The topic selection, conceptual design, and the research process of the subject were directed by graduates. And the experiment program, results analysis were finished by undergraduates. The results indicated that this is helpful for thinking-way formation, skills improvement, and the innovatory consciousness development of the undergraduates. And this is a useful way for quality education for our university students.

Abstract:University is an important incubator for nurturing innovative and enterprising professionals; legal literacy has become an indispensable part of a quality education. In order to form an appropriate understanding of legality and an understanding of law, legal education needs to be integrated into specialist subject courses. A course in Microbiology includes reference to a wide range of laws and regulations. During the course of study, relative laws and regulations can be incorporated, with discussion of real cases, using vivid language to help students develop a form a concrete understanding. Based on the review of assessment methods, the microbial project feasibility report is to be designed with a comprehensive consideration of the product and industry interrelated laws and regulations, improving students' capability in project execution. During the internship in industry, students are guided through the legal framework of enterprise operation, with an emphasis on the importance of laws and regulations at the level of enterprise sustainable development. On the basis of this review, students are trained to learn and use laws and regulations to design their own career blueprint, implementing quality education in a practicable manner, laying a sound foundation for professional development.

Abstract:Microbiology is a compulsory course for biology majors in science base classes. This course plays an active and important role in helping biology majors to build a solid theoretical foundation and broaden their horizons of scientific research. How to strike a balance between foundation and frontier, theory and practice, teaching and research, has posed a challenge to both the content and the form of the course. In order to promote the students' understanding of microbiology and provide the students with academic information in this field, 8 hours of seminars are held every semester. In these seminars, both teachers of this department and experts from other institutes and universities are invited to discuss various topics which are included in the course syllabus. The seminars function as a platform to orient the sophomores in this field of research, stimulate their interest in academic research and promote their creative thinking. Through face-to-face communications in the seminars, the students can not only acquire extracurricular knowledge and get informed of the hotspots in microbiological research, but also learn from the personal research experiences of the experts from different institutes and universities.

Abstract:In this paper, the constructing of the training system on Research Methods and Technologies of Microbiology in Nanjing Agricultural University is discussed. And demonstrating the construction content, construction mode and teaching effect were focused on. The training system is divided into five units and each unit includes two parts, lecture and training of experimental skills. The training system broaden postgraduates knowledge about the application, operation and maintenance of large equipment, and cultivate good experimental technology, rigorous style of experiment, serious scientific attitude, and basic ability and quality of scientific research. Abstract:This article presents several teaching cases in which the author describes how indoctrinate the students with “Scientific inquiry” (observations, question, hypothesis, experiments, theory) when teaching microbiological knowledge. During Microbiology instruction the author pays his attention to describe the scientific inquiry process of the discovery and proof of some milestone events or theories in microbiologic fields to help students establish a sense of innovation. The author also shows his own scientific research results as teaching examples to students in his instruction, and emphasizes to test the students' ability to solve practical problems in the examination of students.

Abstract:Experimental techniques of microbiology are the important part of modern biotechnology. The purpose of the research and practice for the teaching reform of the comprehensive experiment of microbiology was to improve the overall qualities of ethnic minority students specialized in biotechnology in south part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The experimental content was changed to the comprehensive experiment “screening of halophilic actinomycetes producing cellulase” from the basic experiment “screening of soil microorganism”. These teaching methods were employed according to the existing teaching conditions, such as, applying the heuristic teaching and the multimedia courseware, adding the theoretical courses of the microbiological experiments, etc. The surveys showed that the practice of teaching reform stimulated the students' interests in learning, enhanced students' learning initiative and developed the practical skills, the teamwork skills, the exploring skills and the capabilities of experimental design for the students. The students believed that the teaching reform achieved the good results. It is proved in practice that teaching reform had the positive effects to cultivate the inter-disciplinary talents who could meet the need of the social development in Xinjiang.

Abstract:Virtual simulation teachings based on virtual simulation technology, is a powerful supplement and an effective way to improve student' practical ability. By the analysis of experiment teaching status of microbiology experiment, the necessity of constructing virtual simulation teaching mode on microbiology experiment in Nanjing Agricultural University is discussed. This paper focuses on demonstrating the construction thought, construction planning and teaching characteristics. The virtual simulation teaching system is divided into two units fundamental microbiological experiments and applied microbiological experiments. In addition, some scientific research achievements, such as the biological treatment of wastewater, the investigation and utilization of edible fungi, are transferred teaching resources, which results in the plenty of experiment teaching content.

Abstract:Microbiology experimental course plays a vital role in the cultivation of student's basic experiment skills, innovative consciousness and ability, as the basic experimental course independent of Microbiology theory course. The Microbiology teaching laboratory of Nankai University established a multi-level Microbiology experimental teaching system and determined the experimental teaching content with the combination of fundamental experiment, comprehensive experiment and innovative experiment. At the same time, the laboratory makes full use of the teaching and research resource in the university and set up multi-level scientific innovation training platform for students, which focus on cultivating the students' scientific quality, innovative consciousness and ability.

Abstract:In order to stimulate the interest of students in this course and associate these fundamental microbiological skills to the scientific research and practice, a novel teaching model involved in practical and interesting projects putting forward by students is proposed. The integration of these projects in the fundamental experiment course deepened the understanding of these microbiological techniques and stimulated the interest of students in this course. The criteria for the evaluation of the students include the creativity of the project, stringency of the experiment setup and comprehensiveness of the discussion. These arrangements are proved to be some meaningful explorations to accomplish the above goals and also a kind of measure to select out students who is indeed interested in microbiology.

Abstract:For the purpose to increase interests in knowledge learning, operation techniques training, innovative thinking developing, and quality education promoting for collage students, a three-in-one training system were developed and practiced. The system includes lectures in class, experiment in laboratory, and subject research training with the scientific project. And some reformation on teaching method and assessment systems were also included. Among this, a three-way interaction training, that is, teachers, graduate students, and undergraduates, was the key step of the program. And this is the first time that graduates were introduced to quality education of undergraduate. The results indicated that these systems were effective on skills training, learning interest stimulating, innovative thinking development for undergraduates, and enhance the quality-oriented education both for undergraduates and graduates. The system was an effective and useful method for microorganism education.
