Escherichia fergusonii is closely related to Escherichia coli, and is an opportunistic pathogen infecting humans and animals. Since its discovery and naming in 1985, this bacterium has been reported increasingly to be multidrug-resistant, suggesting that it is probably a neglected important reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes (AMRs). In this review, we discuss the current research on E. fergusonii, including the characteristics, identification methods, prevalence, pathogenicity, virulence and antimicrobial resistance, which will help to better understand the role of E. fergusonii in human and animal infections, and to prevent and cure the diseases caused by E. fergusonii.
