    Abstract:

Compared with traditional methods, removal of heavy metals from water by biosorption is a more economic and environmental friendly technology. Microalgae have become a potential biological adsorbent for their low cost and high adsorption rate. To evaluate the potential application value of microalgae in the removal of cadmium, the mechanism of microalgae resistance to heavy metals needs to be analyzed. This review summarizes the microalgae species resistant to Cd, the effects of Cd on microalgae growth, photosynthesis and cell structure, the mechanism of extracellular adsorption and intracellular accumulation, and the cadmium resistance gene regulation. It is of reference value for further heavy metal removal researches.
