    Abstract:

A novel bacterium strain, designated ge21, was isolated from the internal tissue of ginseng root. Its taxonomic position was discussed and its antibiotic activity against pathogenic fungi and Oomycetes was evaluated in this study. The strain ge21 had the highest sequence identity with Paenibacillus granivorans (96.89%). On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, the strain ge21 was identified as a latent novel species of the genus Paenibacillus. The antagonistic effects showed that ge21 expressed antibiotic activity on Fusarium oxysporium, Phytophthora parasitica, Colletotrichum agaves, Alternaria longipes, Pyricularia oryzae Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora cactorum and Sclerotinia schinseng to some extent.
