The research on the disease-inducing mechanisms of pathogens is an important way to reveal the regularity of host infections. Streptococcus suis (SS) is one of the major pathogens causing economic losses in the global pig industry. Among the different SS serotypes, SS serotype 2 (SS2) is the most pathogenic and widespread. This paper briefly describes the crucial virulence factors of SS2 and elaborates on the mechanisms of SS2 in inducing streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome and meningitis, with a view to providing new ideas for the prevention and control of porcine streptococcal diseases.
